The 2009 National Walk for Values in Adelaide


On Saturday, 28 March 2009, National Walks for Values were conducted in Capital Cities right across the Nation. Walkers carried banners, placards, balloons, brochures and handouts in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide and on Sunday 29 March 2009, the National Walk for Values took place in Perth. It was a bright and sunny morning in Adelaide walkers gathered to make ready for the 2009 National Walk for Values.

Participants get ready for the Walk for Values, collect their placards, balloons and banners.

Mr Nigel Dey, a local community broadcaster, reads a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson on Human Values.

Ralph Clarke, City Councillor, on behalf of the Lord Mayor and the City of Adelaide - welcoming the 2009 Walk to Adelaide Councillor Clarke cuts the ribbon and declares the start of Adelaide Walk of the 2008 National Walk for Values.

The 2008 National Walk for Values gets underway, departing Victoria Square to walk the streets in the Saturday Markets in Adelaide

The Five Human Values, Truth, Right Conduct, Love, Peace and Non-Violence follow the Walk Lead Banner. The Atlantic Street Band provide the Walk with music.

The 2008 Adelaide National Walk for Values proceeds along Grote St. to Morphett St, and then along Gouger St and return to Victoria Square.

The Walk for Values turns into Morphett Street on their journey. Walkers carried Banners and placards which proclaimed the practice of Human Values.

The Adelaide Markets came to a halt as shoppers turned to watch the National Walk for Values pass by.

John Lamprell, of Street Friends, brought Fred's Van 1 along as a practical example of Love in Action and parked it beside the Walk Tent. Fred's Van is an activity of the St Vincent de Paul organisation.

The first guest speaker on the day was John Lamprell, who is President of Fred's Van 1. John is responsible for the day to day running of the van where they operate on 4 evenings a week in the CBD to provide food, drinks, blankets & companionship to some of Adelaide's homeless and disadvantaged people. There are 120 volunteers who work on the van who give up one evening every 3 weeks to Fred's Van. You can read John Lamprell's talk, Gratitude and Street Friends

The Walk Ensemble, the Atlantic Street Band, played in the interlude between guest speakers.

David Huppaz was our next guest speaker. David is a native of South Austraia, born in Tanunda in the Barossa Valley region of South Australia. In retirement Dave works as a volunteer at the Aboriginal Catholic Ministry which provides both welfare and spiritual support to indigenous people of Adelaide and also provide a drop in centre for the homeless.
David has a keen interest in Character and Values Education. He has been granted master facilitator status with The Virtues Project International and as such has introduced this character building programme into a number of schools in South Australia. He continues to consult with schools on Character and Values Education.
